Myanmar suspended passport applications for a day due to technical glitches, the Passport Office of Myanmar announced on 25 February.

It was only on 24 February that the application for passports was reopened after two months suspension.

Over 8000 people applied for passports via online process on 24 February but the new system suffered problems.

"The Online booking system needs to be prepared as there are some technical errors occurring and the online booking system will be suspended for a day and will be resumed on February 26," the office said in an announcement.

Although the Passport Office said the new Online Booking system was successful with 8529 applicants, the applicants faced many difficulties such as unable to open the website, booking dates failures even if the applicants paid the fee.

In the new online booking system, the applicant needs to fill up personal details as part of the first step and apply with the online payment system.

In addition, 35,000 Kyats needs to be paid for applying for a new passport or renewing, and 75,000 Kyats need to be paid for lost or damaged passports.
